Pregnancy Resource Center was created more than 20 years ago to serve as a support system for young mothers.
Two decades later, the center is still working for and with the women of the Eufaula area to give the next generation a loving, comfortable family and home to grow up in.
New center director Marcia Hudson has been on board for a little more than two months and has hit the ground running to continue the work set forth since 1998, and to build new programs and initiatives.
Hudson said above all else, she and the volunteer counselors at Pregnancy Resource Center work everyday to ensure the needs of the clients are met.
“Sometimes young women become pregnant, and they don’t know where to turn,” said Hudson. “One they come to us, we tell them about the services we offer. We are a faith-based, non-profit organization affiliated with Care Net. We want to make what can be an uncomfortable thing to deal with in the beginning and turn it in to an easier and more enjoyable process.”
One of the programs at the center uses is Earn Why You Learn.
The DVD-based program teaches young mothers what to expect during each stage of their pregnancy. After giving birth, mothers are encouraged to take part in parenting classes offered at the center. Topics covered in the classes include: money and debt management, car seat safety, budgeting, nutrition and more.
In return for completion of the courses and other appointments, mothers earn “mommy money” that can be used for items from the Grace Room. The credits can be exchanged for clothes, diapers, bottles, blankets and a variety of other items. Car seats and baby cribs are also awarded when the program is completed.
“They are earning it,” said Hudson. “They are saving their mommy money and putting it to use. They get rewarded for being good mothers, and we want them to be as good of a mother as they can be.”
Clients thank the volunteers almost daily for the support they receive during their visits.
“Coming to the Pregnancy Resource Center has been a good experience for me,” said Kim Ross. “Abortion isn’t the only option for women who experience unplanned pregnancies. The volunteers care about us and help us with any struggles we may have. Through the Earn While You Learn program, I was able to earn a car seat for the baby and am able to get other necessities with my ‘Mommy Money’ each week.”
In the last year, Pregnancy Resource Center saw 102 clients, with 86 of those being new clients. In total, 464 different visits and appointments were conducted by the staff.
The staff at Pregnancy Resource Center is made up almost entirely of volunteer counselors. They love being around and helping young mothers and infants grow a develop.
“This is my happy place,” said Lucy Dees, center volunteer. “It’s a joy to be around babies, young mothers and pregnant women. It’s the interacting with them that gets me excited and hopefully my excitement gets them excited. I am a retired nurse, and this is like doing a little bit of nursing. I love every moment of it.”
