Many business owners start their careers after college or well in to their 30s or 40s. But not Gerald Phillips.
Phillips caught the construction bug early and was planting the seeds of his future career before ever attaining a driver’s license.
Phillips owns and operates Trademark Custom Homes, and had been building specialty houses in the Eufaula area for more than 10 years. After playing his craft for years, he took a leap of faith during one of the worst economic times in U.S. history.
“I’ve been around construction job sites since I was 15,” said Phillips. “I worked for my step-brother for 15 years, and began doing a few side projects, like replacing windows and doors and building decks. Over the course of four or five years, I sort of built up my own clientele. I got the courage up and took the jump in to my own business, really without knowing anything about economics or how the housing bust. “April of ’08 was probably the worst time ever to jump in the home market, but we have been blessed to be as busy as we have been.”
Trademark specializes in custom-built new home construction and remodeling, and tailors every piece of the project to the buyers’ specifications and expectations.
Being a custom-based company and covering ever thing from the foundation to the finished building, Phillips feels Trademark can provide more of feeling of having a home, not just a house.
“The fun part about being a custom home builder is not doing the same thing twice,” Phillips said. “I don’t think we have ever copied designs on anything. Some ‘box builders’ get one house plan down pat and that’s all they ever do. We take pride in being custom in every part of the process.”
Constructing houses for local residents is a labor of love for Phillips, and he takes a lot of pride in knowing the customers are over-joyed with the finished product.
Earlier this year, Phillips received his tenth home builder’s license from the state of Alabama, and couldn’t help but smile as he filed it away in his records.
“I never imagined I would be here 10 years later,” said Phillips. “Earlier this year, I sat back and thought ‘Man, I am too young to have been on my own for 10 years. That 10-year mark is exciting and special.”
